Further west, lush green grasslands are scattered throughout the Nunniong Plateau. This rich, subalpine area contains magical snow gum woodlands. Wander through these and you will encounter rare sphagnum bogs—home to frogs—and heathlands with scurrying skinks. Cool temperate rainforests and stands of alpine ash reach for the sky. Nunniong is recognised and renowned for its high aesthetic value.

The alpine sphagnum bogs—made up of hundreds of moss species—of Nunniong are listed as an endangered plant community under national environmental law. Their conservation is essential for protecting vital inland water resources. Protecting the Nunniong Plateau is an important investment in our water security, especially in a changing climate.

Snowy District Natural Attractions Lookout

Project Status Proposal
Year 2023

Buchan is the gateway to an abundance of nature based tourism attractions and opportunities including; forest walks, wild rivers, mountain vistas, camping, canoeing and rafting, wildlife viewing and much more.

While the Buchan Caves are a significant drawcard bringing tourists from all over the world, many other attractions in the district remain largely under-utilised for tourism.

With tourists frequently stopping along the Old Buchan Rd on their way to the Caves, to take in the natural vistas, the community proposes to formalise this activity with the development of a viewing platform. This will provide a safe place to pull over, admire the views and learn about some of the area’s visitor offerings.

What we’re proposing:

  • Build a new lookout over the Buchan valley.

  • Include a large district map showcasing natural attractions, campgrounds and walks.

  • Information on local accommodation, tour and service offering to maximise local benefit.

  • Create an all abilities centrepiece to showcase Buchan’s natural attractions and showcase the area's visitor offerings.

Scenic view of rolling green hills with a winding road, scattered trees, small ponds, and distant mountains under a cloudy sky.

A collaboration with the Buchan community, the Centre for Rural Communities and Emerald Link to increase awareness of natural attractions, promote local businesses and improve visitor experiences.

  • Replacing existing notice boards at Buchan Post Office

  • Creating and providing space for information on local events and natural attractions to bolster community participation and the areas visitor offering.
