Coopracambra

Coopracambra is a biodiversity hotspot full of plant species found nowhere else in Victoria. This region supports a greater number of vegetation communities than any other area of a comparable size in Victoria, from grass tree plains, woodlands and coastal heath, to the tall wet forests and rainforests.

Map of Victoria, Australia, showing rainforests, old forests, and historical logging areas from Coopergambra to coast. Marked locations include Cann River, Mallacoota, and Croajingolong National Park. The map highlights different forest types, logging history from 1980 to 2023, and existing parks and reserves.

Rainforests of Significance

The region showcases Victoria’s botanical diversity with an amazing 29 species of eucalypts found in the area. The area of Jones Creek alone boasts the largest stand of warm temperate rainforest in the state, with 29 fern species and 16 species of vines.

Coopracambra’s diversity is recognised as a National Rainforest Site of Significance, meaning that Coopracambra has rainforest stands unique and special for Australia, and therefore the world.

Mick Baum Park public WiFi Bar shelter

Project Status Completed

Year 2023-2024

Budget $46,000

Project Partner Cann River Community Centre

A small park shelter with a wooden frame and a metal roof, featuring a wooden bench and black chalkboard panels on the sides, located on a concrete pad with grass and a sidewalk nearby.

A small but practical project has just been completed in Cann River, delivering outcomes for locals and visitors alike.

At Mick Baum Park, a shelter has been built over the existing public ‘WiFi Bar’ and USB charging station, making the space more comfortable and useful in all weather. It’s a simple upgrade, but one that means people can now pause, recharge and stay connected—whether they’re just passing through or spending time in town.

New signage has also been added to help people find their way to nearby natural attractions, including the Mt Drummer rainforest. These signs aim to make it easier for both locals and visitors to explore the area and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds Cann River.

This small-scale project reflects Emerald Link’s approach: supporting community infrastructure that helps people connect with nature, in ways that are practical, welcoming and locally meaningful.

Monaro Nature Connection Centre

Project Status Community Engagement

Year 2024

The Monaro Nature Connection concept began as part of community discussions with Emerald Link, exploring how the former Cann River Winery could be revitalised into a vibrant tourism and community hub—now known as The Monaro Center.

While those initial conversations helped shape the vision, the local community has since taken the lead, independently driving the development forward. Emerald Link remains available to assist whenever needed, offering support and collaboration in alignment with community priorities.

The Monaro Nature Connection aims to connect visitors with the rich natural heritage and unique attractions of the Cann Valley District. It draws together a range of experiences—enhanced through wayfinding signage and visitor information—to help people discover what to do and where to go in the region.

Community-led plans for the Monaro Center Tourist Hub at the Old Winery building include:

  • Visitor information focused on the area’s natural attractions

  • An extension of the Cann River walk

  • An outdoor classroom for interactive visitor activities and presentations

This evolving project reflects the community’s vision for a thriving Cann River and celebrates the region’s deep connection to nature.
